Living your life in the fog or hyperfocus of ADHD is extremely frustrating and I do get it. You probably have every intention to get your to do list done or study for your class, but your mind takes you elsewhere like snapping a finger. You are not lazy. You are not just not trying. People tell people with ADHD that they are lazy or worthless or not even trying and it really hurts. I work with clients with ADHD or (attention deficit hyperactivity disorder) on a daily basis. Most of my client come to me with ADHD or they are autistic, and they are at a point where they want to get help for organization, or they want to quit masking and learn to enjoy life without being so tired and exhausted by putting in so much more effort to do the same things as their coworkers, school mates, family or friends.
I work with my clients with ADHD at their request. I do not try to change you or convert you to do or be anything you don’t want to change or be. In session, I understand that you may need a fidget or comfort object during our video session. I want you to be comfortable with talking to me and processing your feelings and that may look like many different things like you drawing or playing a puzzle during session.
The thing is that you may be coming to see me for something completely different that your ADHD, it is just that your ADHD affects how you relate to people and how you process information, so you want a therapist that is knowledgeable about ADHD. I am that therapist. I am a therapist that is neurodivergent herself, so I understand. And, while ADHD is different in every single person, it is still frustrating all the same.
