Transgender and Gender Non-Conforming Specialty
Finding a gender identity affirming therapist in Georgia, or even Atlanta or Decatur, can be difficult. I work with clients who are contemplating, currently going through, or have completed transitioning. I know that gender is also a spectrum and I affirm my clients within that spectrum. I offer a safe space for you through your own personal journey. There are many challenges and joys that occur through the process of transitioning. Deciding when to talk to family, friends, and bosses are times that you will need someone who has the experience needed to help guide you through the process. Dressing in your affirming gender can be very exciting and feel satisfying, but also lead to stress and concern. Navigating through the world of stigma and misgendering can cause anxiety and fear. I also offer grief counseling for people who are experiencing a loss or have fear of losing a spouse or partner and difficulties communicating with children and family.
If you choose to have gender affirmation surgery, I will explore with you that change in your life so that you may make a fully informed decision. I am qualified to write letters for HRT and gender affirmation surgery.
My experience as an advocate and ally for people whom identify LGBTQIA allows me to be well versed in the knowledge needed to treat you kindly and fairly with no judgement. It’s helpful to work with someone who will honor your pronouns and will honor you. I am a member of WPATH and I follow their most current standards of care as necessary. I also follow the model of informed consent and want want my clients to be informed and empowered to make the changes they desire. I am a member of the Atlanta LGBTQ therapist resource.
Distance Counseling in Georgia
As a Distance Credentialed Counselor, I have taken extra training to offer distance video counseling for individuals who are a good fit living throughout Georgia only. This video counseling can be used for brief therapy, longer term individual therapy sessions, in between in person sessions and for obtaining your letters if needed. Often clients living in more rural areas of Georgia such as Albany, Dalton, Americus, Statesboro, Columbus or even Savannah , do not have access to LGBTQIA and gender affirming therapists. I offer this service to allow therapy to be the most convenient possible for my clients. I use a HIPPA compliant video service, HIPPA compliant emailing, phone and text to take the most steps possible to ensure your privacy. Please contact me for a free consultation for distance counseling.
Hormone Replacement Therapy and Gender Confirmation Surgery Letters
Gender Confirmation Surgery and HRT letters- If you choose to have gender affirmation surgery or begin HRT, I am qualified to write letters for HRT and gender affirmation surgery. There are doctor’s offices in Georgia that ask for a letter before beginning treatment. I realize that it can be frustrating to have to have a letter written for something that is of your decision. I will not unnecessarily prolong the process of receiving your letter. But, If you choose to explore deeper for mental health concerns, I see clients for individual or group therapy after they receive their letter if desired. Please note, there is an additional charge for the time to write the letter.
M.E. – My Emergence – A gender identity process group for emerging adolescents and young adults
Join Katie Leikam, LCSW for a gender identity therapeutic process group starting September 30th in downtown Decatur, GA. At M.E. you will be able to express your gender or non gender presenting as you feel most comfortable surrounded by other members that are close to your age and may be experiencing some of the same concerns. We will share and process coming out at high school or college, difficult and joyful emotions, family members and work environments, the process of transitioning and share in your journey of you just being you. This is a small therapy group with time to share your individual experiences. Different than a support group, I will be navigating the conversation so you can explore and process your gender exploration or identity using therapeutic methods such as CBT, mindfulness and solution focused therapy.
Group meets on Saturdays from 1pm to 2:30pm. The cost is 50.00 per session. Ages 14-23 are welcome.
LGBTQIA Couples Counseling
I offer couples counseling for partners and spouses that are dealing with life transitions in their relationship. If one partner or spouse identifies as LGBTQ and/or transgender, I offer sessions to explore hurt, confusion and acceptance within the relationship. Change in relationships is hard no matter what the change is. Change in the form of gender identity or sexual orientation can be harder in a relationship because it can change the core of intimacy in the relationship. If your partner is ready to come to therapy with you, clients often find those sessions helpful. Exploring the ways you will change physically and emotionally, especially when taking hormones, and how those changes may affect your relationship is ideal during your transition.
